A hair transplant consultation is the most important step in your journey. A quality consultation — whether remote or in-person — gives you the information to make an informed decision, and gives the surgeon the information needed to plan your procedure correctly.
What to Prepare Before Your Consultation
Photos: Clear, well-lit photos are essential for remote consultations. Take photos in natural light from multiple angles: top of head (overhead), front, both temples, back and sides (showing donor area). Wet hair is useful for showing true scalp coverage.
Medical history: List any relevant medical conditions, medications (particularly finasteride, minoxidil, blood thinners, antidepressants, immunosuppressants), and any previous hair procedures.
Family history: What hair loss pattern do your father, paternal grandfather, and maternal grandfather have? This is the best predictor of your own long-term trajectory.
Your goals: Think about what you want to achieve. Hairline restoration? Crown coverage? Overall density improvement? Being clear about priorities helps the surgeon plan appropriately.
What a Quality Consultation Should Include
Honest assessment of your current state: Norwood stage, donor density, donor quality, scalp laxity (for FUT).
Predicted future trajectory: Based on age, current stage, family history, and whether you are on medical treatment.
Proposed plan: Graft count, technique (FUE/DHI/Sapphire), staging if appropriate, expected results.
Hairline design discussion: For hairline cases, the planned position should be discussed in detail.
Realistic expectations: What can be achieved with your donor supply? What will ongoing loss look like if untreated? What medical treatment is recommended alongside transplantation?
All-inclusive quote: A detailed breakdown of what is included.
Key Questions to Ask
- Who will perform the procedure — surgeon or technicians?
- What are the surgeon's credentials and years of experience specifically in hair transplantation?
- What graft storage solution do you use?
- What is your measured graft survival rate?
- What aftercare is included, and for how long?
- Can I see before/after results from patients with similar hair loss to mine?
- What happens if I am not satisfied with the result?
