UV radiation has specific effects on the healing scalp that patients need to understand.
Why Sun Exposure Is Problematic After Hair Transplant
In the first 2–4 weeks, grafts are establishing blood supply. Direct UV can damage the vulnerable surface. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is possible — more common in darker skin types. Sunburn causes inflammation that may interfere with healing.
Guidelines
Weeks 1–2: Strictly avoid direct sun. If unavoidable, wear a loose cap that does not press on grafts.
Weeks 3–4: Continued protection. SPF 50+ can be applied from approximately week 3 (confirm with your surgeon).
Months 1–6: SPF 50+ when in direct sun. The transplanted area remains more sensitive.
After 6 months: Normal sun precautions — SPF 30–50 for prolonged exposure.
Practical Tips
- Schedule your transplant when extended sun holidays are not planned in the first 6–8 weeks
- A loose silk scarf or cotton hat provides protection without pressure on grafts
Our aftercare instructions include specific sun protection guidance for every post-procedure period.
