Traction alopecia is a form of hair loss caused by repeated or chronic tension applied to the hair shaft and follicle. It is one of the few types of hair loss that is largely preventable — and when caught early, reversible.

What Causes Traction Alopecia?

Any hairstyle that pulls hair tightly over a prolonged period can cause traction alopecia: tight braids, cornrows, box braids, tight ponytails or high buns, hair extensions with tension weaves, tight dreadlocks.

Who Is Affected?

Traction alopecia disproportionately affects women who regularly wear tight hairstyles. It can affect anyone who wears their hair under prolonged tension.

Reversibility: Early vs Advanced

Early traction alopecia (without scarring): stopping the causative hairstyle may allow recovery.

Advanced traction alopecia (with scarring): once follicles are permanently destroyed, the hair loss is permanent and does not recover spontaneously.

Hair Transplant for Traction Alopecia

Hair transplantation is excellent for traction alopecia when the causative hairstyle has been stopped and the hairline has been stable for at least 1–2 years. Unlike androgenetic alopecia, traction alopecia in a woman with a normal donor zone typically offers excellent transplant results.
