A full, well-defined beard has become one of the most requested aesthetic procedures among men. For those unable to grow a beard naturally due to genetics, scarring, or patchy growth, a beard transplant offers a permanent solution. Istanbul has become the world's leading destination for the procedure — combining surgical expertise with significantly lower costs than Western Europe.
What Is a Beard Transplant?
A beard transplant is a surgical procedure that moves hair follicles from a donor area — typically the back of the scalp — to the face. The transplanted follicles grow naturally in their new location, producing permanent beard hair that can be trimmed, shaved, and styled exactly like naturally grown facial hair.
The procedure uses the same DHI or FUE techniques as scalp hair transplantation, adapted for the specific requirements of facial hair placement.
Who Is a Candidate for a Beard Transplant?
Beard transplantation suits a wide range of patients:
- Men with patchy beard growth who want to fill gaps
- Men with little or no natural beard growth due to genetics
- Men with scarring from acne, accidents, or previous surgery affecting beard growth
- Men who want to define or reshape their beard line
- Men who want to restore a moustache or goatee area
The main requirement is a sufficient donor area on the scalp. Most men have more than enough donor hair for a full beard restoration.
How Many Grafts Does a Beard Transplant Require?
The number of grafts depends on how much coverage you need:
| Area | Typical Graft Range | |---|---| | Moustache only | 350 – 500 | | Goatee | 600 – 900 | | Full beard (patchy fill) | 1,000 – 2,000 | | Full beard (minimal growth) | 2,500 – 4,000 | | Full beard + moustache + sideburns | 3,000 – 5,000 |
Which Technique Is Used?
DHI for Beard Transplants
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is the gold standard for beard transplants. The Choi implanter pen allows the surgeon to control the exact angle, depth and direction of each implanted follicle — critical for producing natural-looking facial hair that follows the natural growth direction of a beard.
Beard hair grows at very specific angles (often almost parallel to the skin surface). A surgeon with experience in beard transplantation understands these angles and replicates them precisely.
FUE for Beard Transplants
FUE may be used for larger beard transplants where higher graft counts are needed. The extraction process is identical to scalp FUE, with DHI-style implantation used for precision placement.
How Much Does a Beard Transplant Cost in Istanbul?
| Graft Count | Cost in Istanbul (All-Inclusive) | Cost in UK/Germany | |---|---|---| | Up to 1,000 | £800 – £1,200 | £3,000 – £5,000 | | 1,000 – 2,500 | £1,200 – £1,800 | £4,000 – £7,000 | | 2,500 – 5,000 | £1,800 – £2,800 | £6,000 – £10,000 |
All-inclusive packages in Istanbul include the procedure, hotel, VIP transfers, aftercare kit and 12 months of remote follow-up.
What Is the Recovery Like?
Beard transplant recovery is straightforward for most patients:
Days 1–3: Mild swelling and redness around the implanted area. Tiny scabs form around each graft — do not touch or pick.
Days 4–7: Scabs begin to loosen. The transplanted hairs may shed along with the scabs — this is normal.
Weeks 2–8: Dormant phase. The face looks much as it did before the procedure.
Month 3–4: New beard hairs begin emerging.
Month 6–9: Significant visible growth. Beard can be trimmed and shaped.
Month 12: Full results — a complete, natural-looking beard.
Most patients return to work within 3–5 days. The small scabs in the beard area are less conspicuous than scalp transplant scabs and can often be disguised with light stubble from surrounding areas.
Will the Beard Look Natural?
Yes — when performed by an experienced surgeon. The key factors for natural results are correct angle placement, appropriate density distribution, and using the right donor hair (scalp hair from the back of the head most closely matches beard hair in texture and calibre).
At Estetİstanbul, Dr. Hamid Aydın's team has extensive experience in facial hair transplantation. We pay particular attention to the natural growth patterns of facial hair — the subtle variations in angle and direction that make a beard look genuinely natural rather than surgically implanted.
Can You Combine a Beard Transplant with a Scalp Transplant?
Yes. Many patients choose to address both scalp hair loss and beard restoration in a single visit to Istanbul. Depending on your donor supply and the areas to be treated, both procedures can sometimes be completed in a single session or across two consecutive days.
