Biotin is one of the most heavily marketed supplements for hair growth. Walk into any pharmacy and you'll find shelves of biotin products claiming to thicken hair, reduce shedding, and restore lost density. What does the evidence actually show?

What Is Biotin?

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a water-soluble B vitamin involved in keratin production — the structural protein that makes up hair shafts. Because keratin is central to hair structure, the reasoning goes that more biotin means stronger, faster-growing hair.

What the Evidence Actually Shows

Biotin deficiency: True biotin deficiency causes hair loss, brittle nails, and skin problems. Correcting a biotin deficiency with supplementation restores normal hair growth. This is well-established.

Without deficiency: The evidence for biotin supplementation in people who are not deficient is very weak. Multiple clinical studies have found no significant benefit for hair growth in biotin-sufficient individuals.

The marketing of biotin for hair growth exploits the genuine connection between deficiency and hair loss, extrapolating it to suggest that more biotin means more hair growth — which the evidence does not support.

Who Might Be Biotin Deficient?

True biotin deficiency is rare in people eating a normal diet, but more common in:

  • People with inflammatory bowel disease or malabsorption conditions
  • Pregnant women (increased biotin demand)
  • People who consume raw egg whites regularly (avidin in raw egg whites blocks biotin absorption)
  • People on long-term antibiotic or anticonvulsant medications
  • People with biotinidase deficiency (a rare genetic condition)

If you fall into one of these categories, biotin supplementation may genuinely help. For most people, it won't.

Other Nutritional Deficiencies That Cause Hair Loss

If nutritional deficiency is contributing to your hair loss, other deficiencies are more commonly implicated than biotin:

Iron deficiency: The most common nutritional cause of hair loss, particularly in women. Ferritin (stored iron) levels below 30 ng/mL are associated with increased shedding even without anaemia. A blood test confirms this.

Vitamin D: Low vitamin D levels are associated with alopecia areata and telogen effluvium. Many people in northern latitudes are deficient, particularly in winter.

Zinc: Zinc deficiency causes diffuse hair loss and is more common than often recognised, particularly in vegetarians and those with restricted diets.

Protein: Severe protein restriction (crash dieting, restrictive eating disorders) causes significant hair shedding within 2–3 months.

If you're experiencing hair loss and suspect a nutritional cause, a blood test covering ferritin, vitamin D, zinc, and full blood count is the appropriate first step — not a biotin supplement.

When to See a Doctor

Hair loss significant enough to cause concern warrants professional assessment. A dermatologist or GP can:

  • Test for nutritional deficiencies and correct them
  • Assess whether you have androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, or another cause
  • Recommend evidence-based treatments (finasteride, minoxidil) if appropriate
  • Refer for a hair transplant consultation if loss is established and permanent

Don't spend years on supplements hoping for results. If hair loss is progressing, earlier professional assessment leads to better outcomes.
