What Is FUT (Strip Method)?
FUT was the dominant hair transplant technique from the 1990s through the mid-2000s. A surgeon removes a horizontal strip of scalp tissue — typically from the back of the head — and dissects it under a microscope to extract individual follicular units. The donor area is then sutured closed.
Advantages of FUT:
- High graft yield — a single session can yield 3,000–5,000 grafts
- Lower cost than FUE in many clinics
- The follicles are not handled individually during extraction, which some surgeons argue preserves graft quality
Disadvantages of FUT:
- A permanent linear scar runs across the back of the head — visible with short haircuts
- Longer recovery time due to the wound and sutures
- More post-operative discomfort
- Limited ability to wear hair short
What Is FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)?
FUE extracts follicular units individually using a small circular punch tool, typically 0.7–0.9 mm in diameter. Each follicle is removed one by one from the donor area, leaving only tiny, scattered micro-wounds that heal to small white dots invisible to the naked eye.
Modern variations include Sapphire FUE (using sapphire-tipped punches for cleaner incisions) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation, which combines extraction and implantation in a single step).
Advantages of FUE:
- No linear scar — patients can wear their hair at any length, including shaved
- Faster recovery — most patients return to desk work within 3–5 days
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Can harvest grafts from body hair (beard, chest) if scalp donor supply is limited
Disadvantages of FUE:
- Slightly more time-consuming per graft
- Marginally higher cost than FUT at comparable clinics
- Maximum graft yield per session is typically lower than FUT (though high-volume FUE sessions of 4,000–5,000 grafts are possible with experienced surgeons)
Scarring: The Key Practical Difference
For most patients, the scar question is decisive. FUT leaves a permanent linear scar that is only concealed by longer hair. FUE leaves no linear scar — only tiny dots that are invisible in all but the very shortest hairstyles.
If you ever want to wear your hair short, buzz cut, or shaved, FUE is the only appropriate choice. If you exclusively wear your hair long and cost is a primary concern, FUT remains a viable option — but it is increasingly rare at quality clinics.
Which Technique Is Used at Estetİstanbul?
We perform Sapphire FUE and DHI exclusively. We stopped offering FUT years ago because the vast majority of patients — regardless of age or hair length preference — benefit from the flexibility and scar-free outcome that FUE provides.
Sapphire FUE uses sapphire crystal blades instead of steel punches. The sharper, more precise incision reduces tissue trauma, speeds healing, and allows denser packing of grafts in the recipient area.
DHI uses a patented Choi implanter pen to extract and implant follicles in a single step, without creating pre-made incisions. This technique is particularly effective for hairline work requiring precise angulation and maximum density.
How to Choose
If you are researching clinics that still offer FUT, ask why. In most cases, the honest answer is that FUT is cheaper to perform. For patients, the scar risk rarely outweighs the cost saving — particularly since the cost difference disappears entirely when you compare Istanbul FUE pricing with European FUT pricing.
