The consultation is the most important step in your hair transplant journey. A reputable clinic welcomes detailed questions; one that deflects, rushes, or provides vague answers is telling you something important. Here are the questions that matter most.
About the Surgeon
1. Who will perform my procedure? This is non-negotiable. Confirm that a licensed, qualified surgeon will perform the procedure — not a team of unqualified technicians operating without medical oversight. Ask for the surgeon's name, qualifications, and registration.
2. How many procedures has the surgeon personally performed? Experience matters enormously. A surgeon who has performed 10,000+ procedures has a fundamentally different skill level to one who has performed 500. Ask specifically about experience with your hair type and loss pattern.
3. Are you an ISHRS member? The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery maintains professional standards for member surgeons. Membership is not a guarantee of quality but indicates commitment to professional standards.
About the Procedure
4. Which technique do you recommend for me, and why? The surgeon should be able to explain — specifically for your case — why they recommend FUE, Sapphire FUE, or DHI, and what the reasoning is. A generic answer ("we do DHI for everyone") is less reassuring than a case-specific explanation.
5. How many grafts do you estimate I need? Get a specific graft count estimate. Understand what this is based on — the pattern of loss, desired density, and donor availability. Be wary of very large estimates (5,000+) for smaller procedures, or estimates that seem too low for the coverage described.
6. Who will be in the operating room, and what are their roles? Understand the composition of the surgical team. Who extracts? Who implants? Who monitors? What are the qualifications of each team member?
7. Will I be shown the hairline design before surgery begins? The answer should be yes. You should approve the proposed hairline before any incisions are made.
About Results
8. Can I see before/after results from patients with similar hair loss patterns to mine? Any reputable clinic can show verified before/after documentation. Ask specifically for patients with similar Norwood stages and hair types. Results from very different cases are less informative.
9. What graft survival rate do you typically achieve? A realistic answer for a good clinic is 90–95%. Be sceptical of claims above 98% or vague answers.
10. What happens if results are unsatisfactory? Understand the clinic's policy on follow-up, assessment, and any corrective procedures in cases of suboptimal outcomes.
About Safety and Accreditation
11. Is your facility JCI accredited? JCI accreditation is independently verified and indicates internationally audited standards.
12. Does your clinic hold Ministry of Health health tourism authorisation? For clinics in Turkey, this is the specific government authorisation for international patient care.
13. What anaesthetic is used and who administers it? Local anaesthetic is standard. It should be administered by or under the direct supervision of a qualified medical professional.
About Aftercare
14. What aftercare support is included and for how long? A reputable clinic includes 12 months of remote aftercare — photo consultations, medication guidance, and access to the clinical team. Understand exactly what is included.
15. What is your policy on post-operative complications? Understand how the clinic responds to infection, unexpected shedding, or other complications — including for international patients who have returned home.
