FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation, also called strip transplant) are the two primary methods of harvesting donor hair. Understanding their differences helps patients make informed decisions — though it is worth noting that FUE now dominates for most patients.
FUT: Strip Technique
In FUT, a strip of scalp skin is surgically excised from the donor zone. Individual follicular units are then dissected from the strip under microscope and implanted into the recipient area.
Advantages:
- High graft yield per session
- Grafts dissected under controlled conditions with lower transection rates
- No shaving of donor area required
- Potentially better for patients needing maximum grafts in a single session
Disadvantages:
- Linear scar across the back of the head — visible if hair is worn very short
- Longer recovery and post-operative discomfort
- Requires suturing and later suture removal
- Limits very short hairstyles permanently
FUE: Individual Extraction
In FUE, individual follicular units are extracted one at a time using a small punch (0.6–1.0mm). No strip is removed. The donor area heals with tiny circular scars that are not visible at normal hair lengths.
Advantages:
- No linear scar — can wear hair very short
- Faster recovery
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Body hair can also be harvested (chest, beard)
- Better for patients wearing short back and sides
Disadvantages:
- More time-consuming per graft
- Slightly higher transection rate than FUT in less experienced hands
- Donor area must typically be shaved
Which Is Better in 2026?
FUE is the dominant technique globally and the primary choice for the vast majority of patients. FUT retains specific applications:
- Patients needing maximum graft yield in a single session who are willing to accept a scar
- Corrective procedures to harvest additional grafts in patients with previous FUE extraction
- Specific cases where donor quality is better preserved by strip
For patients concerned about scarring or who prefer short hairstyles, FUE is clearly preferable. Istanbul clinics have largely transitioned to FUE as the primary technique, with FUT available for specific indications.
