Sun exposure after a hair transplant is one of the more commonly overlooked aftercare risks, particularly for patients travelling home to sunny climates or those with summer procedures.
Why Sun Exposure Is Risky After a Hair Transplant
UV damage to healing tissue: The recipient zone contains thousands of healing micro-wounds in the weeks after surgery. UV radiation impairs cellular repair mechanisms and increases oxidative stress, slowing healing and impairing graft integration.
Hyperpigmentation: Healing skin is more susceptible to UV-induced pigment changes. Patients who expose the transplanted area to strong sun during healing may develop darker pigmentation that can take months to fade.
Dehydration: Direct sun causes rapid moisture loss from the scalp surface, counteracting the moisture balance needed for scab softening and graft integration.
Heat and vasodilation: High temperatures cause vasodilation, potentially increasing swelling in patients with post-operative inflammation.
Rules: What to Avoid and When
First 2 weeks: Avoid all direct sun exposure to the scalp. If going outdoors, wear a loose-fitting hat that does not press on the recipient zone.
Weeks 2–4: Continue to minimise direct sun. If unavoidable, use physical sun protection. Chemical sunscreens should not be applied directly to the recipient zone during this period.
Month 1–3: Once scabs have fully shed, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen can be applied to the scalp. Prolonged direct exposure should still be limited.
Month 3 onwards: Normal sun exposure with standard SPF protection. The scalp can be treated like any other area of skin.
Practical Tips for International Patients
Many patients fly home from Istanbul to warm climates. A loose hat for transit, minimising outdoor time during the first two weeks, and delaying beach or pool holidays until month 3 are the key precautions.
What If You Got Sunburned?
Contact your clinic with photographs. Mild brief exposure is unlikely to cause serious harm; severe sunburn is more concerning and warrants prompt assessment.
