Sun protection after a hair transplant is one of the most commonly underestimated post-operative requirements. The scalp — particularly the recipient zone — is highly vulnerable to UV damage in the weeks following surgery.
Why Sun Exposure Is Dangerous After Hair Transplant
In the first 2 weeks: The recipient area is healing. Grafts are not yet fully anchored. Direct sunlight causes burns and inflammation that can damage grafts and disrupt healing. UV radiation on freshly healing tissue can cause hyperpigmentation (dark spots) that may persist for months.
In weeks 2–8: Healing is underway but the scalp remains more sun-sensitive than normal. The new skin forming around graft sites is fragile. UV exposure can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark marks that fade slowly.
Beyond 8 weeks: The scalp returns to normal sun sensitivity. Standard sun protection is appropriate.
Post-Transplant Sun Protection Guidelines
Weeks 1–2: Complete avoidance of direct sun exposure on the recipient area. If outdoors, a loose-fitting hat (worn carefully to avoid disturbing grafts) or UV-protective umbrella.
Weeks 2–4: Continue avoiding direct prolonged sun. Loose hats are now safer. Do not apply sunscreen directly to the recipient area until grafts are fully established and there is no crusting.
Month 1–3: Sunscreen (SPF 30–50) can be applied once the scalp has fully healed. Continued use of sun-protective headwear in strong sun is recommended.
What Type of Hat Is Safe?
In the first 1–2 weeks, a loose-fitting hat that does not press on the recipient area is the safest option. Tight-fitting hats that press on newly implanted grafts can dislodge them. Our team advises on appropriate headwear as part of your post-operative instructions.
Travelling to Hot Climates After Hair Transplant
Patients who have travelled to Istanbul from countries with high UV index should be particularly careful about the sun exposure during the trip home and in the weeks following. If returning to a sunny climate, plan for sun avoidance during the critical first month.
