Exercise and Sport After Hair Transplant: When Can You Return to Training?

Physical activity after a hair transplant must be carefully managed. Exercise affects healing through increased blood pressure, sweating, and physical contact — all of which can impact graft survival in the critical first weeks.

Why Exercise Is Restricted After Hair Transplant

Blood pressure elevation: Intense exercise raises blood pressure and heart rate, which increases blood flow to the scalp. This can cause minor bleeding at extraction and implantation sites in the first days post-procedure, and can increase swelling.

Sweating: Sweat contains salt and bacteria. The scalp is healing with many small open puncture wounds in the donor area and recipient sites. Sweat contaminating these sites increases infection risk.

Physical contact risk: Contact sports risk direct impact to the scalp, which can dislodge grafts in the first 1–2 weeks.

Scalp movement and tension: Activities that cause significant head movement or scalp tension can disturb newly placed grafts.

Return to Exercise Timeline

Days 1–7: Complete rest from all exercise. Walking is acceptable.

Days 7–14: Light walking (20–30 minutes) is acceptable. No elevated heart rate activities.

Week 2–3: Light walking extended. Still no gym, no swimming, no sport.

Weeks 3–4: Light cardiovascular exercise (slow cycling, light walking) may be acceptable depending on your healing. Consult your surgeon.

Week 4–6: Return to moderate gym exercise (light weights, moderate cardio) for most patients.

Week 6–8: Most normal exercise resumed. Sweaty activities (hot yoga, sauna, steam room) best avoided until 4–6 weeks.

Contact sports: Return to contact sports (football, rugby, martial arts, boxing) after a minimum of 4 weeks, ideally 6 weeks.

Swimming: Pool swimming should wait at least 4 weeks (chlorine exposure to healing scalp). Open water and sea swimming also 4 weeks minimum.

Tips for Active Patients

Plan your procedure timing with exercise in mind. Many active patients schedule their transplant before a planned holiday or rest period that naturally accommodates the activity restrictions.

Our team provides specific exercise guidelines based on your individual healing progress. During your 12 months of remote aftercare, we're available to advise on when to resume specific activities.
