Eyebrow transplantation is one of the most technically specialised applications of FUE hair restoration. The eyebrow is a highly visible facial feature with unique growth direction requirements — making precise technique essential for natural results.
Who Is a Candidate for Eyebrow Transplantation?
Eyebrow transplantation is appropriate for patients who have experienced:
- Thinning or complete loss of eyebrows due to over-plucking (the most common cause)
- Eyebrow loss following trauma, burns, or scarring
- Eyebrow loss from alopecia areata (once stable for at least 2 years)
- Naturally sparse or thin eyebrows since birth
- Eyebrow loss following chemotherapy (once hair recovery has stabilised)
- Eyebrow damage from tattoo removal or previous cosmetic procedures
How Eyebrow Transplantation Works
The technique uses standard FUE extraction from the scalp (typically behind the ear or at the nape of the neck, where hair most closely resembles eyebrow hair in fineness). Individual follicular units — almost exclusively single-hair grafts — are implanted into the eyebrow area.
The critical technical challenge is the extremely precise angle and direction requirements. Eyebrow hairs grow at very shallow angles, almost flat against the skin, with very specific directional patterns (different in the head, body, and tail of the brow). Incorrectly angled grafts result in upward-growing hairs that look unnatural.
How Many Grafts Are Needed?
- Light thinning (partial restoration): 100–200 grafts per brow
- Moderate loss: 200–350 grafts per brow
- Complete restoration of absent brows: 300–500 grafts per brow
Healing and Results
Days 1–10: Small crusts form and fall. Weeks 2–4: Transplanted hairs fall (shock loss — normal). Months 3–4: New growth begins. Months 6–12: Full, mature result visible.
Important characteristic: Transplanted scalp hair grows faster than native eyebrow hair. Most patients need to trim their transplanted brows regularly — typically every 1–3 weeks, similar to head hair.
Post-Procedure Design
The eyebrow design is created in consultation with the patient before the procedure. This includes shape, arch height, tail position, and symmetry — all of which should be agreed upon with the patient prior to any implantation.
